One of the truest measures of our spiritual state is our level of thankfulness. While the ups and downs of everyday life can lead us to self-centeredness and even entitlement, the Lord calls us to grow a heart of gratitude. Ephesians 5.20 goes so far as to say we should be “giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Being thankful “always and for everything” may sound impossible and probably is, apart from the power of the Spirit in us. But we can learn to grow a heart of gratitude for God and to God as we consider who He is, how He works, and the many ways in which He blesses us.
