Unity brings responsibility. The wonderful gift of unity that the Lord has given us means that each of us bear a responsibility to help maintain it. In Ephesians 4.1-6, we discover three things we must do to maintain unity.
First, we must honor our calling. The Lord has called each of us to salvation, sanctification, new identification, and an eternal destination. This is the big story of His redemption of which all our smaller stories are a part. As brothers and sisters in Christ, we are all apart of the same story… God’s story.
Second, we must cultivate our character. Who we are matters because we either enhance or destroy unity by the quality of our character. Paul instructs us to deal with one another with humility, gentleness, patience, and love – the very qualities that God promises His Spirit will grow in us.
Third, we must maintain our core. Christianity is built on a set of core truths (doctrines) which must be believed. These truths provide a powerful source of unity.
