Jesus began the greatest sermon ever preached talking about blessing. Every culture and every person who has ever lived have some idea of blessing which they carry around with them. Often, our sense of blessing is tied to material goods, key relationships, and important experiences. Speaking to a crowd of people under the oppression of the Roman Empire as well as religious legalism, Jesus’ idea of blessing must have been surprising. For Jesus, blessing runs not only deeper but is often at odds with the culture around us. It is a powerful introduction to a sermon which was sure to get people’s attention and make them want to hear the rest.
