Jesus’ next lesson in the Sermon on the Mount has to do with disciples’ posture in the world. We are not called to withdraw from the world but are called to engage it. Jesus calls us both salt and light. Both these images teach us about how we are to relate to the world for the sake of the Gospel. Salt is useful, beneficial, and common while light brings illumination to spiritual realities.
Do we fully understand that we’re not called to occasionally act like salt and light but truly are these things? If so, how do we make the Kingdom of God both tangible and visible?
