Master Plan (10) – Ephesians 6.10-24

In this final section of Ephesians, Paul teaches us how to stand in the midst of the spiritual battle which is taking place in the ‘heavenly places’ but also directly impacts our daily lives. He is very clear that there are demonic beings who serve at the direction of God’s enemy, Satan. They comprise a power structure over what he calls the ‘kingdom of darkness’. Through many tactics such as false teaching and messages, temptation, trials and difficulties, and even direct attack*, the devil relentlessly attacks the world, the Church, and individual believers.

The first thing we do to stand is that we are to stand in God’s strength. Jesus is the king who has defeated these evil powers (though their ultimate fate has not yet come to pass) so God’s abundant strength is to be our strength as we stand. We live in a relationship of dependence on Him, not in our own strength or power.

The second thing we do to stand is to stand in God’s armor. Paul offers a list of essential and fundamental aspects of the Christian life (truth, righteousness, sharing the Gospel, faith, salvation, and Scripture) in which we must continue to grow and utilize. These, he says, are like various pieces of armor which will not only protect us in the battle but will also help us fight back.

Finally, we stand in prayer. Prayer is the most indispensible practice we engage in because in prayer we not only express our dependence on the Lord but we also receive the strength, wisdom, knowledge, and discernment we need. We cannot afford to be a Church that does not pray!
