Master Plan (6) – Ephesians 4.1-16

The beginning of chapter 4 in Ephesians is a major turning point in the letter.  Having described the glory of God’s eternal plan of salvation in chapters 1-3, Paul turns from the question, ‘what has God done for us?’ to the question, ‘what does God require of us?’
His first answer to that question centers on the issue of unity.  In the Church, God has created a new humanity that is perfectly united in Christ.  His expectation is that we will honor, experience, and walk in that unity.
In 4.1-16, Paul teaches us that unity is maintained through Christ-like character, it rests on our common faith, is pursued through the diversity of God’s gifts, and ultimately has maturity as it’s goal.
The unity of the Church has come about at the cost of the life of the Son of God and must be maintained.  Not only does this continue God’s witness to the world but it is also the community and environment in which God grows us in Christ
