Now Appearing (3) – Luke 24.13-35
In the final message of the series, we see Jesus appear as the resurrected One.  The story of how Jesus appears to the disciples on their way to Emmaus is a very important one because, if we’re a believer in Jesus, it’s our story too.
Though the two disciples saw Jesus with their physical eyes, they were kept from recognizing him.  That may sound strange at first, that God would keep them from recognizing Jesus, but there’s actually good news here.  Instead of trying to convince the disciples He was alive by performing various ‘proofs’, Jesus directed them to the Scriptures to help them understand why everything had taken place the way it did.  It wasn’t until he broke bread and gave it to them that their spiritual eyes were opened and they saw Him for who He is: the resurrected Lord.
This is good news for us because it means that we don’t have to see Jesus with our physical eyes.  We see him through the eyes of faith.  Since he ascended into heaven, this is how he has been and continues to appear to people today: personally, in the real world, in Word and Sacrament, and in the fellowship of the Church.  The most important place He appears is in the Scriptures, which is why we need to continue to lean in and meet Him there.
Jesus is, indeed, risen from the grave.  Just as he physically appeared to the first disciples, He continues to appear today, spiritually, so that people will trust in Him for salvation.  Hallelujah!
