These Are The Words (2)

The first of Jesus’ letters in Revelation is to the church in Ephesus.  Ephesus was the leading city of the region, the center of worship of the goddess Artemis.  Her temple was a wonder of the ancient world and a great source of pride for the city.  In addition, Ephesus was an important city in terms of emperor worship.  It was a challenging place to live with devotion to Christ alone.  Jesus commended the Ephesian church for their hard work, doctrinal faithfulness, and for their endurance.  They were especially careful to guard the truths of God’s Word and hold themselves accountable to it, even testing would-be apostles.  Their failure, however, was to live in love.  Genuine love for God and love for one another.
