In this part of Jesus’ farewell address, we discover that true love is a love that suffers. Not all of Jesus’ suffering, though, was physical. It was also deeply relational. Jesus, with full knowledge of all that was happening, willingly suffered the betrayal of one of his closest followers. Yet, he still loved us to the fullest extent.
As we reflect on God’s love for us, including Jesus’ willingness to suffer, we understand that love is a choice, love is a risk, and love requires courage.
